The sound absorption property of a product is measured in square meters Sabine (m2S). The value declares how large “perfect” absorber a product is equivalent to. One square meter Sabine is declared for a product whose sound absorption is equivalent to one square meter perfect sound absorber. A higher value represents more sound absorption. The measure with square meters Sabine as unit is often called ‘absorption surface’ or just ‘absorption’.

The addition ‘Sabine’ (S) to square meter (m2)is used to distinguish the value from ordinary geometric surface. Ordinary geometric surface can be measured using a ruler or a measuring tape, but an acoustic laboratory is needed to measure the absorption surface in square meters Sabine.

The name Sabine has historic origin and it is used in honour to the American scientist Wallace Clement Sabine, who founded the science of architectural acoustics through his experiments at Harvard in the end of the 19th century.
